Window layouts for a 49-inch ultrawide Mac setup
Snapping tools were designed for a 16:10 laptop screen. On a 5120×1440 panel, half the screen is a 2560-pixel-wide window that is mostly empty, and a quarter is a shape no app was designed for. Ultrawides need their own layout, not a scaled-up laptop one.

Why halves and quarters fail on an ultrawide
A 49″ ultrawide is 5120×1440: roughly three 1440p screens side by side, with the height of one. Every assumption behind a halves-and-quarters window manager breaks on that aspect ratio.
- A half is too wide. 2560 pixels of line length is unreadable for text and unusable for most app layouts. You end up with a maximised window that has a column of content and a desert on either side.
- A quarter is the wrong shape. 1280×720 in the corner of a very wide, short screen puts two of your tiles below eye level, where nothing useful lives.
- Thirds are closer, but fixed. Three equal columns waste the fact that your editor deserves more room than your chat window.
What actually works: five tiles, centre-weighted
FAST ships a dedicated 49″ Super Ultrawide layout and applies it automatically when it detects a native 5120×1440 display. Internally it is called Ultra Focus (5), and it is deliberately centre-weighted rather than an even grid:
- A 24.5% column on the left, split into two stacked tiles.
- A 46.3% Primary tile in the centre, full height — almost half the desk in one uninterrupted pane, and roughly the width of a 2560px display.
- A 24.5% column on the right, split into two stacked tiles.
So the centre keeps a genuinely usable primary pane instead of a 2560-pixel-wide half, and the four things you glance at sit in stacked side columns rather than in corners below eye level.
Divider weights are proportional rather than fixed, so you can push the Primary tile wider without the layout ceasing to make sense. It is also one of twelve built-in layouts: ⌃⌥← and ⌃⌥→ cycle through them on the display under the pointer, wrapping at either end and leaving every other display on its own choice. Smaller 16:9 workspaces get a three-tile Compact Focus layout and standard Mac displays a four-tile Focus + Utility layout, chosen automatically from the effective workspace size.
Every display keeps its own layout
This is the part that matters more than the layout itself. In FAST each connected monitor has its own layout, its own backdrop and its own saved app assignments. A MacBook docked to an ultrawide at the office and the same MacBook alone in a café are two different arrangements, and neither overwrites the other. Switching between them is not a reconfiguration; it is just plugging in.
Getting around five tiles without a mouse
Reaching across 1.2 metres of screen with a trackpad is its own tax. Spatial navigation removes it: ⌃⌥ H/J/K/L moves the focus left, down, up and right through the actual layout, and adding ⇧ moves the window instead of the focus. ⌃⌥↩ collapses the active display into a single clean pane for as long as you need it, then puts everything back exactly as it was. Stacks matter more here, not less
An ultrawide tempts you to keep everything visible at once, which is how five tiles become five windows you have stopped reading. Dropping a window onto an occupied tile stacks it instead of evicting what was there; a numbered badge appears and ⌃⌥⇥ cycles. Two related things share one tile, and you keep the width for what deserves it.
A note on ultrawide performance
A 5120×1440 panel is around 7.4 million pixels, and at 240Hz your Mac has roughly four milliseconds to produce each frame. That is worth knowing because it is why heavy, animated apps feel worse on an ultrawide than on a laptop screen — the cost of everything on screen scales with area.
